The entire path is full of shapes that you have to knock down in order to make way for yourself, all of them are white. Each phase includes a specific color that you must avoid; whenever you come across a shape that's that color, avoid it at all cost, or you'll have to start all over again.

On the upper part of the screen, a status bar will show you the distance you've covered. So, if you want to figure out how far you've got until you're safe and sound, just check out the status bar.
